Video on Reading for Comprehension

1. The purpose of academic reading is successful meaning-making of the text.

2. One might think comprehension is “knowing what the words mean” and “what the author said”. When there is no reflection, understanding breaks down. One may not know there is misunderstanding and thus one continues in ignorance. Therefore, a lot of attention has to be placed on getting to feel the lack of understanding/slow down in the face of the realization that one did not get it.

3. What research does exist makes clear that self-prompted main idea/summarization is the most important strategy.

4. All of the successful interventions with strategies to help meaning-making leads to the use a steady diet of formative assessments with progressively challenging texts to be read to check if comprehension and the use of specific strategies, are improving.
